Prevention is better than cure

Forewarned is forearmed or so the saying goes. That is why the ECC provides a number of tips so you can make your purchases in an informed manner.

Where possible request a sales contract in writing. Insist that all verbal promises are also mentioned in writing in the contract.

Before signing read every word in the contract, also the small print and the annoying formulas. If you do not understand something then ask the seller for an explanation and have him include his explanation in the contract in writing.

Don’t forget to read the contract’s general terms and conditions. These are usually mentioned on the back of the contract in small print and in a very boring style. But don’t be discouraged. Ask explanation in informal language where necessary.

If you are unhappy about the goods purchased or the services rendered, then react immediately. Return to the store and if the seller does not respond to your complaint, write a registered letter. This is a first proof of your complaint.

You purchase an item of clothing and once home are not happy with the colour or feel that the trousers are too tight. Do you know that you do not have the right to exchange the product or have it reimbursed if you went to the store yourself and purchased the item yourself. The only exception is defects to the product. Some stores do however provide for the possibility of exchange or reimbursement. This is a commercial gesture, not an obligation. In the case of mail order purchases you have 7 working days to return your purchase after delivery of the product.
