Radar detectors – prohibited or not?
In Belgium radar alerts are allowed but radar detectors are not. Radar alerts and radar detectors are two different systems.
Radar alerts are based on the exchange of information. The motorists inform each other in real time of the presence of speed cameras or mobile radars.
Radar detectors, on the other hand, receive radar signals from the speed check equipment and are prohibited.
The use of a GPS or app on a smart phone that warns of the presence of speed cameras or mobile radars is therefore not prohibited in Belgium.
But this is not the case in all countries in the EU. In some countries their use is prohibited and subject to a fine. Fines may be as high as thousands of euros.
